What Exactly is a Polycarbonate Greenhouse and Why Should I Care?

Polycarbonate greenhouses are quickly becoming the go-to choice by backyard garden enthusiasts surpassing glass and polyethylene film greenhouses.

Polycarbonate is offered in corrugated or flat sheets / panels. These panels also come in a variety of thicknesses. Thicker panels have more layers. Each additional layer increases the panels insulating factor, and subsequently increases the cost as well.

Polycarbonate is lighter, stronger, and more durable than glass, but is almost as transparent as glass.

What Makes Polycarbonate Popular?

Because of the increased insulating factor over greenhouse windows, polycarbonate manufactured backyard greenhouses require less cooling in the summer, and less heating in the winter.

One key point to keep in mind when looking for a new polycarbonate backyard greenhouse - make sure the panels are coated with a UV protectant. Otherwise, the panels will turn yellowish over time.

Due to the increased insulating factors and more durable make-up of poly-, some backyard greenhouse owners have started replacing the glass, and/or windows, of their older structures with poly- panels. Because they come in panels, some suppliers will custom cut the panels to your desired size making window replacement easier.

Polycarbonate is the most durable covering option you can get on backyard greenhouses today.
