Sounds funny to me to say that I am a webmaster seeing as how just a few years ago I knew N-O-T-H-I-N-G about how to create a website, much less a website that makes money!
The Beginning of a Career
Before I get ahead of myself – let me tell you a little more about who I am and how I got to where I am now…
I have had a good professional career over the past 10 years in sales for companies involved in different aspects of the construction industry. I would like to say that I chose my career… but, the reality of it is my career chose me.
What do I mean by my career chose me?
Well, my Dad has always owned his own business. So, I grew up spending practically every Summer vacation, Spring break, and sometimes even Christmas break, working with my Dad. Early on I worked with my Dad at the request of my Mom. I seem to recall something along the lines of “Get him out my hair” being involved in that request. Being 1 of 4 kids (1 older brother and a younger brother and sister (twins)), I was the PEST.
Over the years, my Dad showed me the ropes of construction, from building houses, to restaurants, and finally to portable storage buildings and other backyard structures (thus, the theme of my-backyard-projects.com).
After a while I grew to enjoy it, and learned an appreciation of accomplishment, being able to look at something I built (or helped build) and say “I DID THAT!”.
So, back to the point – how did my career choose me?
Well, when it came time to find my first professional job, the one thing on my resume was all this construction experience I had gained over the years.
So, guess who was interested in hiring me? Companies that sell product(s) to the construction industry – that’s who.
Soooo, I became a sales rep.
Only one problem with all this…
I don’t consider myself a salesman. Strange, I know. I’ve been in sales for 10+ years, and I don’t consider myself a salesman.
My problem is, I do not want to sell someone (my customers) something I feel they may not really need just so I can earn a paycheck.
So, how have I been able to be successful you ask?
Well, I have worked for companies that have great products that I believe in and then I provide my customers with the best information I can about the products I represent, and then let them decide if they need them or not. Follow that up with attention to great customer service, and the fact they feel confident that I will take care of any problems that come up (a personal great guarantee, if you will), and I have been able to put together a good career so far.
So, why do I have a website if I’ve been able to put together a good career?
Easy. I miss that feeling of personal satisfaction I learned from my Dad that I used to get when I looked at something I created and was able to say “I DID THAT!”
Well, early this Spring (2008) I had a light bulb moment while I was building a playset for my boys. I was in the middle of the job and I found myself whistling a tune for no reason, and it dawned on me that I haven’t whistled for no reason since the days when I worked with my Dad.
I was whistling because I was enjoying what I was doing, which caused me to forget about my worries for a while.
That’s when the light bulb came on and I realized I had made a career doing something I didn’t really LOVE, or gain much personal satisfaction from (other than the strong relationships I’ve been able to build with my customers).
So, I started searching for something better, a business I could do on my own, something I would enjoy, something I knew about, and something that would bring back that feeling of personal satisfaction.
Concerns and Reservations
Only problem with my new plan – I’ve got a family to support and provide for – how can I make a career change or career move without jeopardizing the welfare of my family?
So on I searched…
Truthfully, I didn’t really believe I would be able to find anything worthwhile, because I have always been v-e-r-y skeptical of most of the products and services I read about that promise success.
Besides, I thought, what would all my friends and family think of my decision? Would they roll their eyes and think I’d lost it by falling victim to some web fantasy of a better life?
Discovery of a Solution
Despite these thoughts, in March 2008 I started searching once again. Then in early April I came across Site Build It!
I don’t recall exactly how I stumbled across it. But after reading about what they had to offer, for the very first time…
…I found myself feeling they had something worth paying attention to.
